User Services

The library has activated a subscription to SensusAccess, an automated document conversion service into alternative multimedia formats. Students and teaching staff can use the service by following the instructions at the bottom of this page

The Library offers the following services:

  • bibliographic information, guidance and research advice service;
  • reading and reference service (in the Library or in the classroom);
  • consultation service in the Library of works of particular importance or value (ancient, rare and valuable resources);
  • listening service for sound and audiovisual resources;
  • loan service;
  • service of InterLibrary Loan interlibrary loan;
  • service of Document Delivery – provision of copies of documents;
  • reproduction service (photocopies on site; digital scanning of historical material; downloading of images from the Digital Library);
  • Internet access and wireless networking service;
  • resource access service online by subscription.

The services are organised and provided in compliance with current legislation on copyright and with respect for the safeguarding and proper preservation of the bibliographic resources held by the Library.

Access

Library access is permitted to all users who need it for study or research purposes. Users are required to deposit bags, rucksacks and other items not strictly necessary for consultation, reading and research in the designated lockers (ask for the key at the circulation desk). In order to protect the collection and to enable the compilation of statistics, everyone entering the Library is required to sign the attendance register.

Access to the Library and the use of the services offered must take place with behaviour that is respectful of others and of the heritage. 

Reference

To request bibliographic information and on-site research assistance, users can approach the staff on duty, who provide a bibliographic information and research guidance service—covering general, musical and historical-musicological research—aimed, on the one hand, at ensuring optimal use of research tools and, on the other, at promoting knowledge of how to access the services.

Identified through the catalogue the bibliographic resource you are looking for, it is necessary to fill in the consultation request form and hand it in at the circulation desk. For very large numbers of requests, it is advisable to send the list of desired items at least the day before (write to: servizi.biblioteca@consmilano.it).

Consultation of bibliographic resources that have not yet been stamped and inventoried, nor of those in a poor state of preservation, is not permitted.

Consultation of sound and audiovisual material

In the library premises, it is possible to access sound and audiovisual material. Sound and audiovisual material must be used in compliance with copyright provisions. Users are expressly forbidden from duplicating the library's sound and audiovisual resources.

Consultation of works of special importance or value (ancient, rare and valuable resources)

Users conducting scientific research of a musicological, historical or bibliographic nature can request to consult ancient, rare and valuable resources by filling out the request form at the circulation desk. For very large numbers of requests, it is advisable to send the list of desired items at least the day before (write to: servizi.biblioteca@consmilano.it).

Classroom consultation

For educational and research purposes, internal users (students and teachers of the Conservatoire) are permitted to consult the library's bibliographic resources in the classroom. Requests must be made using the appropriate form and items must be returned on the same day the request is made, by the closing time of the Library.

Consultation in the classroom of printed music (including collected editions and *monumenta*) with a publication date after 1920 is permitted; as is that of monographs, series, librettos and reference works with a publication date after 1960.

To request a bibliographic resource on loan, you must fill out the consultation form and hand it over to the staff in charge of distribution; once you have received the bibliographic resource, you must inform the staff of your intention to borrow it. The loan lasts for 25 days and is renewable if applicable, and each user cannot request more than 3 books on loan at the same time.

Home-lending of monographs stored in the warehouse and published after 1960 is permitted, provided they have already been inventoried and catalogued and are in a good state of preservation.

Interlibrary Loan – Interlibrary Loan

The interlibrary loan service (InterLibrary Loan) provides internal users (students and teachers at the Conservatoire) with bibliographic resources not held by the Conservatoire library and provides other libraries with bibliographic resources held by the Conservatoire library.

Requests must be sent by email to the address: servizi.biblioteca@consmilano.it accompanied by comprehensive bibliographical data.

For requests from other libraries, the service costs €8 (equivalent to one IFLA voucher); payment can be made via bank transfer or IFLA voucher. The requesting library will receive an email with the cost estimate for the service and payment instructions. Once the estimate has been accepted, the dispatch procedure is initiated.

Resources admitted to interlibrary loan are those admitted to the home loan service.

Document Delivery – Provision of copies of documents

The service of providing copies of documents (Document Delivery) provides internal users (students and teachers at the Conservatoire) with reproductions of a part of a bibliographic resource not held by the Conservatoire's library (e.g. a chapter in a monograph or an article in a periodical) and provides other libraries with reproductions of parts of bibliographic resources held by the Conservatoire's library.

Requests must be sent by email to the address: servizi.biblioteca@consmilano.it accompanied by comprehensive bibliographical data.

The library operates on a reciprocal free-of-charge basis, therefore no reimbursement of expenses is required. Copies are normally sent in jpeg or pdf format via WeTransfer or a similar service.

All requests for reproductions are subject to the current laws on copyright (Law No. 633 of 22 April 1941 as amended and supplemented).

Under current legislation, the following are free reproductions of bibliographic items made by own means solely for study, research, free manifestation of thought or creative expression, promotion of knowledge of the cultural heritage, carried out without profit (Law no. 124 of 4 August 2017, article 1, paragraph 171, which partially amends article 108 of Legislative Decree 42/2004). Free reproduction is carried out exclusively in compliance with current legislation on copyright (Law No. 633 of 22 April 1941 and subsequent amendments and additions) and by methods that do not involve any physical contact with the property, nor the exposure of the same to light sources, nor, within cultural institutes, the use of stands or tripods. The dissemination by any means of images of cultural property, legitimately acquired, is also free, in such a way that they cannot be further reproduced for profit.

Photocopying at headquarters

The Conservatoire provides users with photocopy machines self-service available in the Library. It is necessary to purchase a €5 or €10 prepaid card (including a €3 deposit) directly at the distribution counter in the Library; the cards are non-refundable and do not expire. The cost of photocopies is €0.05 for Conservatory students and teachers and €0.10 for all other users.

For reasons of preservation and protection, the reproduction by means of photocopying of printed bibliographic resources with a publication date after 1920 is permitted, provided that they have already been inventoried and catalogued and that they are in a good state of preservation.

Digital scans of historical material

For bibliographic resources excluded from photocopying, it is possible to request a digital scan. To access the service, users must send the request by email, accompanied by complete bibliographic data, to the address: servizi.biblioteca@consmilano.it. The user will receive an email with the quote for the service expense reimbursement and payment instructions. Once the quote is accepted, the dispatch procedure is activated.

The digitised bibliographic resource is sent, in jpeg or pdf format, usually via WeTransfer or similar service, upon presentation of the payment receipt.

Downloading images from the Digital Library

The Platform open source DSpace-GLAM managing the Digital library it allows the downloading of images of the Library's digitised heritage. To access the service, requests accompanied by complete bibliographic details must be sent to the address: servizi.biblioteca@consmilano.it

Editorial or commercial use of images (requests for reproductions of historical material or downloads from the Digital Library)

For the editorial or commercial use of images of the Library's heritage, users must request prior authorisation from the Library. To access the service, it is necessary to send the request, accompanied by complete bibliographic data, to the address: servizi.biblioteca@consmilano.it. Once permission has been granted, the user is obliged to include in the publication the complete bibliographical citation of the source of origin.

In the Library, users are allowed internet access via PCs located in the entrance foyer or via the network wireless (with password to ask the distribution staff in the library).

In accordance with the functions and objectives of the Library, the workstations are primarily intended for consulting the Library's electronic catalogue, searching for information on books and musical works held by Italian and foreign libraries, and consulting websites on musical and musicological subjects as well as those concerning the artistic-musical area and disciplinary areas related in any way to music.

It is forbidden:

  • carry out operations that affect or compromise the regular operation of the network or restrict its usability and performance for other users;
  • alter, remove or damage configurations of the software and of the’hardware;
  • install software;
  • entering chat rooms or making virtual phone calls

The Library guarantees its users access to databases, journals, ebooks and other digital collections, in accordance with the constraints of subscription contracts, via PCs available to users in the Library or via the network wireless.

For students and teachers of the Conservatoire, access to these resources is also possible remotely via proxy server (request proxy login credentials by email at: servizi.biblioteca@consmilano.it)

SensusAccess is a self-service which allows documents to be automatically converted into various alternative multimedia formats:

  • digital braille, for braille keyboards or printers
  • audio files in MP3 format, to listen to the reading
  • MS Word format, to change contrast options or print in large fonts
  • ebook in EPUB format

The service can also be used to facilitate access to documents that would otherwise be inaccessible, such as PDF files or scanned images/texts.

The conversion process involves four simple steps:

  1. Uploading the original file;
  2. Choice of final (output) format;
  3. Send request;
  4. Receipt by e-mail of the converted and accessible file or the download link in the case of large file sizes.

Submitted documents will be automatically deleted when the conversion is completed.
The processed file will be available for 7 days. After this period, the requested processing will be automatically deleted from the server.

Students and staff of the “G. Verdi” Milan Conservatoire can use the service with the its institutional mail address (@consmilano.it – @studenti.consmilano.it).

  3. Neither the “G. Verdi” Conservatory of Music in Milan nor SensusApS shall be held responsible for any information disclosed and/or misused
  4. The end user is responsible for the safekeeping of the made available material, which must be used without infringing the intellectual property rights of the respective authors.
  5. It is recommended not to use this service for sending and exchanging confidential or private information.
