The T4T project
The Four Turandot – T4T is an international advanced artistic training project led by the Milan Conservatory in partnership with the Conservatories of Florence, Modena-Carpi, Piacenza and Turin, the Polytechnic of the Arts of Bergamo, NABA Nuova Accademia di Belle Arti, and the University of Milan. International collaborations include the Miller Theatre in Augusta, Keimyung University in Daegu, the Zhejiang Conservatory of Music in Hangzhou and the Italian Cultural Institute in Shanghai, with the participation of Casa Ricordi and the Archivio Storico Ricordi. Launched in 2024, on the centenary of Giacomo Puccini’s death, the project culminated in 2026, marking the centenary of the world premiere of Turandot.
Four Turandot international productions
At the heart of T4T is Puccini’s final masterpiece, explored through the four versions known to music scholarship: the unfinished version performed at the 1926 premiere, Franco Alfano’s two finales, and the version completed by Luciano Berio. The four versions have been presented in multimedia productions in the United States, Italy, South Korea and China, bringing together performers and artistic teams from different countries and institutions.
Training and international mobility
Students, young artists, teachers, researchers and professionals from different disciplines have taken part in auditions, workshops, research activities and international mobility programmes. Singers, conductors, collaborative pianists, composers, philologists, directors and designers have worked across the different production venues alongside the orchestras, choirs and artistic communities of the host institutions.
Research and innovation
Alongside the productions, T4T has combined research and interdisciplinary experimentation through an international research programme, a comparative critical edition of Franco Alfano’s two finales with Casa Ricordi, an exhibition developed with the Archivio Storico Ricordi, a contemporary epilogue to Turandot, and projects spanning music, stage direction, costume design, 3D technologies, virtual scenography and multimedia production.
Future perspectives
Through artistic production, advanced training, research and transnational mobility, the project has created a model of cooperation between Italian and international higher education institutions, connecting historical heritage with contemporary artistic practice. The international network established through T4T provides a strong foundation for new opportunities for cultural and academic cooperation and for the development of future projects and exchanges among the institutions involved.

The project
The Milan Conservatory, in network with the Conservatories of Florence, Modena and Carpi, Parma and Turin, the Polytechnic of the Arts of Bergamo, the NABA-New Academy of Fine Arts of Milan, and the University of Milan, won a tender issued by the Ministry of University and Research. Subsidised with European funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, following the covid-19 pandemic, they were awarded the transnational mobility project “The Four Turandot-T4T”.
The project involves teachers and students and is dedicated to Giacomo Puccini’s latest masterpiece, Turandot, with the aim of presenting to the public, by March 2026, all four versions of the opera currently known to the world of scholarship, in four different multimedia performances with high technological content in four different countries of the world.
The Milan Conservatory will therefore involve 3 prestigious institutions in particular, to create a co-production of Turandot and stage three of the four performances at their venue (one of them will be staged in Milan). The main characters of the opera (Turandot, Calaf, Liù) will move transnationally, as will collaborative pianists, directors, and set designers; they will all be students selected through auditions.
The T4T project also includes:
an international study conference dedicated both to Puccini as a student at the Milan Conservatory and to the results and influences of Puccini’s work on the world of music;
an exhibition, also in two parts, dedicated to Puccini as a student at the Milan Conservatory, and to his last opera Turandot, in collaboration with the Archivio Storico Ricordi;
the comparative critical edition of the two finales of Turandot written by Franco Alfano, in collaboration with Casa Ricordi
the creation of three new contemporary epilogues of the opera.
In the first phase, the project will issue Auditions, aimed at students of higher musical education and universities, for the selection of singers, conductors, collaborative pianists, philologists and composers. Those students who will move transnationally to work at the production or edition of Turandot, can come from any country in the world.
